Why and Who Needs Device Fingerprints for Work?

Your digital fingerprint uniquely identifies you on the internet, much like how your physical fingerprint identifies you uniquely.

This digital fingerprint is a combination of a long list of small and ordinary system details such as screen resolution, browser version, GPU model, installed fonts, and a lot more. On their own, these details cannot be used to uniquely tell apart one person from another.

Take screen resolution, for example. Thousands of people can have the same screen resolution. The same goes for your timezone, your list of installed fonts, or almost any other fingerprint parameter. Even an IP address isn’t that useful alone, because one can easily change it using a VPN or switching to a different network.

But when you stack dozens of these details together, it builds a unique profile (aka the digital fingerprint) due to the difference in the combination of parameters between users.

That’s why websites use digital fingerprints to remember and track visitors.

But many users don’t want to be tracked by these websites for a lot of reasons. And so they use special tools to tweak their digital fingerprint to look different from their real identity.

Who Changes Their Device Fingerprints?

  1. Affiliate marketers, for example, need their browser to genuinely look like it’s coming from the country they’re targeting.
  2. Software testers and developers also need to customize device fingerprints to simulate dozens of devices and browser combinations in order to test their apps or websites from the lens of a global audience.
  3. Data scrapers are another group of professionals who need to assign their scraping scripts a human-like fingerprint to get past anti-bot websites.

This act of faking your fingerprint is called fingerprint spoofing. But there’s a certain way to do that successfully without getting caught.

For now, let’s show you what kind of fingerprint spoofing attempts can fail against BrowserLeaks checks. After that, I’ll show you how you should pursue fingerprint spoofing without detection.

Why “Noise Builders” Fail BrowserLeaks

Many people think they can change their IPs using a VPN or proxy and that’ll spoof their fingerprint.

Or they use some other basic fingerprint spoofing browser extension.

The reality is that modern websites can see through these approaches. You can use a proxy or a VPN and try passing the Iphey fingerprint test, for example. It will reveal that you are using a proxy/VPN. If a tool like Iphey can catch you, rest assured, websites with an advanced detection system certainly will.

And if a website catches you trying to fake your fingerprint, it can block your access permanently.

But how do websites catch fingerprint spoofing? By detecting inconsistencies or contradictions in the fingerprint.

Let me demonstrate this using an example and show you how BrowserLeaks can detect me.

How BrowserLeaks Detected Me (& Can Detect You As Well)

I’ll first change my location to Dallas using a VPN extension and then run different BrowserLeaks tests.

Here’s the result of the WebRTC Leak Test. While the test is detecting the Dallas IP address as my IP address, the IP leak from the WebRTC is still giving away my actual public IP address (from Pakistan).

So if you’re visiting a website using a VPN and your WebRTC is leaking your original IP address, the website can catch you from this contradiction.

Another way websites can catch contradictions in location is by geolocating you.

To demonstrate this, I ran BrowserLeaks’ Geolocation test while connected to the same VPN location.

The test prompted me to share my location with the site, and I allowed it for this time only.

Despite being connected through a Dallas IP, the test was able to geolocate me to my actual location.

But that’s not all. Websites also maintain lists of IP addresses associated with VPNs and proxies. They cross-check visitor IPs against this list to detect people faking their location.

Something similar happened with my Dallas IP address.

BrowserLeaks’ IP address test revealed that the network that my Dallas IP address belongs to shares its IPs with a VPN or TOR network (Look in the Network row in the screenshot below).

Step-by-Step: How to Pass BrowserLeaks Audits Using Gologin

What you saw was what happens when you don’t use proper fingerprint spoofing tools.

To spoof a fingerprint, you need to change an entire set of its parameters, which can potentially cause a mismatch if they are not consistent with each other. That consistency is not something you can achieve manually.

There are special browsers, called antidetect browsers, made specifically for this purpose.

They can auto-generate a totally random but consistent fingerprint with the click of a button. Some also allow you to manually tweak parameters. When you tweak certain parameters, the browser automatically changes certain other parameters to maintain consistency.

Let me show you how Gologin passes BrowserLeaks tests even with a spoofed fingerprint:

1. Download Gologin for your operating system and install it

2. Sign up and log in to your Gologin account

3. From the Gologin’s dashboard, press Add Profile and give it a name

4. In the Proxy tab, select Gologin Proxy and pick a country and proxy type, or select Your Proxy if you’re using one from a 3rd party provider. For this test, I used Gologin’s built-in residential proxy from Germany.

5. Let’s also change our screen resolution.

6. Click Create Profile

7. Click Run to launch the new profile.

8. In the browser window that opens, head to the BrowserLeaks website and run different tests. Let’s first run the IP test to see if BrowserLeaks can detect my actual IP. The result came back as no. BrowserLeaks only sees our fake German IP.

9. Then I ran the Geolocation test to see if BrowserLeaks can catch me through my geolocation. Gologin passed this test too by matching geolocation coordinates to my German IP to BrowserLeaks.

10.Then I ran the last test to see if BrowserLeaks can see my actual screen resolution (1536×864) or the spoofed one (1366×768). For this, you have to run the JavaScript test. The result was: BrowserLeaks cannot detect my actual screen resolution.
