Google Ads Account Suspended? Fix and Prevention Guide

As a marketer, I’ve been managing Google Ads accounts for years and like everyone else, I started without understanding the platform’s guidelines. As a result, my Google Ads account has been banned three times.

I recovered every time by promptly following-up with the customer support and explaining my case but now, I take the terms of use very seriously.

If your Google Ads account is suspended, I will guide you through reasons why this happens, what you can do about it, a complete account recovery roadmap and things to look out for in the future to avoid bans.

TL;DR:

A Google Ads account ban can result from running third-party automations, policy violations, duplications, spam, and inappropriate content. You can recover your account by reaching out to the customer support, and aligning your ads campaigns and account information with their terms of use. By following the recovery process explained by Google, you can recover your ad account (if possible).

It’s always advised to use antidetect browsers like Gologin to manage multiple Google Ads accounts, avoid account linking and collective ban of all accounts, and protect your device from getting blacklisted by Google’s detection systems.

Types of Google Ads Account Suspensions

Google explains that it has two types of account suspension scenarios. A user either gets suspended for repeated violations despite the warnings, or they can immediately be blocked without any prior warning. Both of these cases depend on the severity of the violation.

Depending on the type of violation, you may still access reports, and other account settings but cannot run ads. A normal suspension or temporary hold lets you access other features of your account (mostly read-only access) but a permanent ban will restrict access from even accessing your ads dashboard.

Google also distinguishes temporary suspensions from complete bans. Billing overdue issues, and payment account issues are mostly temporary and the suspension is removed as soon as you fix the payment method or clear pending dues.

However, outright policy violations can result in permanent bans. Google does not want you to exploit Ads account to test the same ad on ten different accounts, or try to manage CPC by faking competition in low competition niches. Any attempt at abusing Google’s search engine or ads platform results in a ban.

Type What you see Typical root cause Recovery chance
Temporary hold Soft warnings/billing prompts/ads paused Payment method verification, overdue balance High
Suspension “Account suspended” type banner and email explaining the reason Repeated policy violations, or suspicious behavior/activity Medium
Ban-like suspension Unable to access account/dashboard Using third-party tools/automations, severe content violation Low

Reasons for Google Ads Account Ban

Google Ads account doesn’t get suspended for ‘no reason’ anymore. If you diagnose, there is always a reason, and even a potential fix in some cases. Below are some common reasons for account suspensions, and how to check if you’re facing any of these.

Google Ad Account Recovery Roadmap

1. Payment & Billing Issues (Most Common Google Ads Ban Reason)

Billing issues are the most frequent reason why accounts get suspended. These types of holds are temporary and can be resolved when the payment issue is fixed/replaced and due payment is cleared.

Billing related suspensions are triggered by unpaid balances, chargebacks, bank disputes, suspicious payment activity, mismatched billing profiles or using virtual cards to pile up due balance and then closing account or pausing ads.

In some cases, Google might ask you to verify identity in order to resume your Google Ads account services.

2. Policy Violations (Strike-Based Suspension System)

If your policy violation wasn’t too serious, Google lets you off with a warning. It often follows a strike system (strikes are not always visible to the user but something Google uses in its detection system to score account health).

The detection system usually lets you off with a warning or a temporary hold that can be resolved by verifying identity. Frequent or severe violations can result in full suspension and advertisers lose access to all account reports, and data.

Policy violations can include running misleading ads, ranking for irrelevant keywords, promoting restricted products, misusing trademarks, etc.

3. Content Violations (Website & Landing Page Issues)

Sometimes, you do everything right but still get your ads account suspended. Your website’s content can be one of the reasons.

Some scammers use cloaking to show different content to Google and users, adding hidden redirects, promoting misleading claims, missing privacy policy and terms of service pages, etc.

If your website has poor health, Google doesn’t want to promote it. I’ve seen accounts getting suspended just because of a compromised WordPress plugin so you have to regularly audit your website.

4. Suspicious Activity & Account Security Flags

Sometimes, it’s not even your fault. Google suspends an account to protect against suspicious login activity or damage. Common triggers include login from unusual locations, sudden sending spikes, failed login attempts and a fishy browsing behavior. In this case, Google will pause ads and request ID verification.

5. Automation & Bot-Like Behavior

Marketers create automations to manage ads, export reports to ERPs, and other purposes. Automations aren’t always a bad thing. However, bot behavior aimed to spam ads or violate Google’s policies is the problem.

If your bot works exactly like you (create an ad, test, monitor and maybe make changes later on), then it’s fine. However, if your bot tries to create several campaigns at once, make bulk edits in a short spam or tries operating the account using browser actions, Google will suspend your account.

Third-party tools that operate on top of your Google Ads account can also result in account ban. If you use extensions or tools that violate Google’s guidelines and data privacy laws, you put your account at risk.

6. Circumventing Systems & Multi-Account Abuse

If you circumvent the ban by creating other accounts after suspension, Google will instantly find out and ban you. It won’t give you a warning this time – just a straight ban.

Google tracks your account activity and login behavior. It knows your IP address, device fingerprint, browser version, etc. It has a whole profile on you and which accounts you operate from the same device. It knows what other accounts you own, and will easily figure out if you create just another account.

This situation is known as ‘account linking’ where platforms like Google figure out which accounts are operated from the same device, and link them together. If one account violates terms and conditions, others get banned too.

7. The Hidden Problems I Often See

Multi-account linking, billing mismatch issues and website integrity issues are some common hidden problems. You did everything right but your account got suspended because it was linked to another Google account that violated Google Ads policies in the past.

You created a new Google Ads account and tried creating too many campaigns too fast. This behavior is seen as spam. Always try to warm-up your account. This increases your maturity score (unofficial way to say Google scores each profile based on their spending and behavior).

IP Address Ban & Device Fingerprinting Explained

Temporary and permanent suspensions are one thing but IP address or device ban is a whole different level of ‘we don’t want you’ from platforms like Google.

If you repeatedly violate policies, get your account banned, create a new one and do the same, Google will end up banning your IP and device altogether. You will not be able to access Google Ads or create any more accounts from this device or your Govt. ID.

This type of ban is impossible to reverse. Google will not give you ‘another chance’ after continuous violations. This scenario most commonly happens with spam marketers and automation experts who try running large scale spam campaigns.

Google tracks your device fingerprint. This includes:

  • Browser type
  • OS
  • Screen resolution
  • Fonts & hardware
  • Cookies & session data
  • IP address

Since it has a complete profile on you, you can’t use this device to create another account. It will instantly get suspended. To truly bypass Google from tracking your device fingerprint and IP, you need isolated environments.

How to Unban Google Ads Account: Recovery Roadmap

Google’s official help page states that the appeal process is inside Google Ads UI. When you open your account, or try logging in, you will see the option for ‘Contact Us’ in the Ads dashboard or ‘Appeal Decision’ if you’re unable to login.

You can file an appeal and wait for a response from Google’s customer support. Filing too many appeals will not help your case. It is recommended to file only one appeal and then wait.

Advertisers have up to six months from suspension date to submit an appeal.

My Step-by-Step Suspension Recovery Workflow

This workflow has worked for me and most people on the internet discussion forums.

  1. Identify the exact suspension reason in the warning banner or email. It will explain which policies were violated, and contain a link to appeal.
  2. Do not try to make any changes to your ad, or instantly create a new account to publish the same ad.
  3. Check if you have a billing issue. Replace your card information before appealing or retrying.
  4. Complete required verification before appealing if prompted. Verification improves account trust score and significantly increases chances of recovery.
  5. Write an appeal description honestly, take blame if you accidentally violated any policy, and ensure compliance in the future. Explain your whole case and what specific issue resulted in a violation and suspension.

Google Payments Profile: Billing Issues with Google Ads Account

Google Payments profile manages all your billings on Google services. Whether it’s Google Ads, Play Store, Google Cloud or other service, your card information will always be stored in Google Payments from where you can access each billing profile and transaction history.

When you add a new payment method instead of using an existing one, you’re asked to fill in some basic information like billing address, etc. This information must match with your bank details. Otherwise, you will be put into a manual review that can take days to resolve.

The best solution is, that if you face any issue, follow the following steps:

  1. Go to Google Payments, and close the payment profile from settings.
  2. Create a new Payment profile, add accurate bank account information, and save.
  3. Verify identity if prompted by Google Payments.
  4. Go to Google Ads and select the verified payments profile.

This way, I was able to skip the long wait of getting manually verified by customer support because of my mismatched name or address.

Preventing a Google Ads Ban With Gologin

As we discussed above, Google Ads tracks your device fingerprint. When multiple accounts log into the same device, they share the same device fingerprint and get linked together. If one account violates terms and gets banned, others are at risk of getting banned with it.

Identity linking is a huge problem for marketers who manage multiple accounts. The solution is to isolate each account activity in a way that Google Ads never finds out that they are being accessed from the same device.

Gologin is an antidetect browser that provides you with different IP addresses and device fingerprints to operate multiple Google Ads accounts. Instead of using your original IP and browser fingerprint, it generates its own fingerprint and uses one of its own IP addresses to isolate your activity.

It even isolates cookies and session storage for each account so the platform doesn’t figure out that all devices are being operated from the same device.

If you’re a marketer or agency handling multiple client accounts you need to protect your account against bans. This includes:

  1. Using a pool of unique and secure IP addresses
  2. Masking your original device fingerprint so that each account shares a different virtual fingerprint
  3. Running automations through specialized tools like Gologin

Antidetect browsers like Gologin change your IP address and browser fingerprint that is different from your original fingerprint. This masking helps you keep your original device IP and fingerprint off the radar. If you do get a device ban, it will be on the Gologin profile, not your actual device.

Moreover, each browser profile gets a unique fingerprint and acts like a unique device in another location. This way, you can manage multiple Google Ads accounts in Gologin profiles without worrying about getting them linked and banned together.

Step-by-Step Guide: Managing Multiple Google Ads Accounts with Gologin

Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up multiple Google Ads accounts via Gologin and avoid account linking:

1. Download the Gologin App: Sign-up on Gologin website and install the desktop app.

2. Create a New Browser Profile: Open the Gologin browser and log in. You can manage your browser profiles from the dashboard. Create a new profile from here. Give it a useful name and select your IP location.

3. Launch the Profile and Log in to Google Ads: Run the profile you created. It will act as a unique device with its own IP, MAC address, and location. Head over to Google Ads Web and log in or sign-up. Now, Gologin profile IP and fingerprint are tied to this account.

4. Create More Gologin Browser Profiles: Repeat step #3. Create a new profile, assign it a different proxy this time to change the IP address. Go to Google Ads and login to a different account. Now, you’ve got multiple isolated browser profiles, each with a specific account.

5. Sharing Gologin Profiles With Team: You can share your browser sessions with your team. When you share your Gologin profile, the cookies, and storage is also synced for them.

So, Google Ads thinks it’s the same device IP and fingerprint even when it’s being accessed from another device. You can now collaborate using this Gologin profile or even invite more people to use and manage accounts.
