Opening a website only to find out it’s blocked in your location is one of the most annoying turn-offs.
And when you assume it’ll be hard to get around that block, you’re even less likely to keep trying.
What are your options anyway? Luckily, you’ve got a few ways.
And is there a tool that lets you open blocked sites like they were never blocked in the first place? Yes, there is.
In this article, you’ll find all possible ways to unblock a website listed in order of effectiveness.
Let’s walk you through the most effective method first.
Unblock Websites Using Gologin
Gologin is a professional proxy browser with built-in proxy support and fingerprint spoofing. You can unblock access to any blocked website regardless of whether the website is blocked by your state or ISP, or you’ve been IP-banned by the website itself.
To use it, you simply need to download it, create a browser profile, and add your proxy. Within a few clicks and minutes, you’ll be browsing blocked websites without facing any issues.
Gologin supports many proxy providers and even offers its own proxies. You’ll also find all your browser extensions on Gologin.
Now, don’t confuse Gologin with the cheap, inefficient tricks where you open a website and enter a website’s URL to unblock it. Gologin is a full-fledged antidetect browser. It looks and feels like your regular browser but with built-in features to unblock websites, browse anonymously, operate multiple accounts, and more. Regular browsers don’t offer these features.
Here’s how you can get started with Gologin:
1. Sign up for a free Gologin account and download the browser on your computer.
2. Open Gologin and create a new browser profile by clicking the + icon at the top. You can rename the profile based on how you want to use it.
3. In the Location column, you get to select either Gologin’s proxy or configure your own. You will have to enter the proxy details given by your proxy provider if you choose to use your own proxy. If the proxy is working, the Location column will start showing the location of the proxy IP.
4. Launch the profile you just created by clicking the Run button next to the profile’s name. This will open a new tab looking similar to a Google Chrome new tab.
5. Enter the blocked website’s URL and press Enter. Gologin will unblock the website and let you browse through it like it was never blocked.
| Pros | Cons |
| Built-in proxies and proxy configuration support | Advanced features can be overkill for casual users |
| Supports multiple proxy providers | |
| Full fingerprint spoofing for anonymity | |
| Supports many professional use cases |
Gologin Use Cases
The ability to unblock websites is but a small feature of Gologin. The browser can handle professional use cases that require additional privacy and anonymity than a regular browser. Here are a few of those use cases:
- Multi accounting: You can run multiple browser profiles and run multiple social media accounts of the same platforms in parallel without getting banned. Professionals who manage social media accounts of their clients, especially when they are from different places, use Gologin for this purpose. Without Gologin, they’d have to buy multiple devices to do the same.
- Advertising: You can run multiple ad accounts or view your ads from the point of view of your audiences.
- Web scraping: Gologin also lets you scrape website anonymously without being identified as a web scraper and being blocked.
Unblock Websites Using a VPN
If you only want to unblock websites from time to time, you can also use a VPN.
Similar to proxies, VPNs also route your traffic through its servers located globally which makes the websites think you’re browsing from a different country instead of your own.
However, VPNs also encrypt your traffic so that no entity, like the government or your ISP, is able to see what you’re doing.
Here are the things you should look for to choose a reputable VPN:
- Check the VPN’s logging policy. It should say no logs.
- Make sure the VPN has a server in the locations you want to browse from.
- Evaluate the VPN’s quality through real user reviews on platforms like Trustpilot or G2.
- Look for independent audits or reviews of the VPN from third-party entities.
| Pros | Cons |
| Low price | Detections and bans |
| Easy to use. Many VPNs now offer browser extensions | Low speeds |
| Crashes | |
| It can’t be used to run multiple accounts in parallel. | |
| Can sell your data |
Unblock Websites Using A Proxy IP
Proxies are IP addresses from different locations. You can add those proxies to your device and browse from other locations, instead of your own.
Read about proxies in more detail in our guide: What are proxies?
For now, let’s show you how you can add a proxy. First off, you need to buy a proxy. There are many reputable proxy providers out there.
We personally use Floppydata’s proxies. Here’s what their proxy dashboard looks like:
Each entry in the list is a new proxy and will give you a unique IP address.
After buying proxies, you need to configure one of them for your browser. If you use Google Chrome or other Chromium browsers like Brave, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, etc, you’ll have to configure proxy in your operating system’s settings because these browsers don’t offer built-in proxy support.
Here’s what proxy settings look like in Windows 10 and 11.
You simply need to copy the required proxy details from your proxy provider’s dashboard and paste them in the settings and hit save.
When you open your browser after this, you’ll be asked to enter your username and password. These details are also given in the proxy dashboard. Each proxy has a unique set of usernames and passwords. After entering these, the proxy will activate, and you’ll be able to browse blocked websites.
| Pros | Cons |
| Good speed | Free proxies are dangerous |
| Less chance of restriction | Good proxies are expensive |
| Less convenient than Proxy browsers | |
| Still dependent on solutions like a proxy browser for multi-accounting |
Unblock Websites Using Web Proxy Services (Use With Caution!)
Web proxies are websites that render blocked websites within their own interface.
You might have come across them before. They are almost always free and simply require you to enter the website’s URL. You don’t have any other controls.
Blockaway and Proxysite are two popular web proxies.
Web proxies provide the least efficient way to unblock websites.
They’re full of dangers. Most of them make money by tracking your browsing activity and selling it to third-parties like advertisers, or in worst cases, hackers.
They also don’t use encryption. All your activity is visible to entities on the network like your ISP and the proxy site. So if you enter passwords when using web proxies, you’re taking a grave risk.
Web proxies also have poor performance. Their infrastructure is poorly built, and since they’re free to use, many people are using them at the same time. So, slow speeds are a common issue.
These proxies also randomly stop working. Many of them also bombard you with ads or redirect you to unwanted pages to make money from your clicks.
| Pros | Cons |
| Very easy to use | Slow and unstable |
| Free | No encryption of your data |
| No installation or setup required | Full of ads |
| Good for one-off and low-risk browsing | Cannot handle professional use cases |
| Randomly stops working after loading a few pages |
Other Methods & Tricks We Don’t Recommend
When looking for ways to unblock websites, you’ll also find a range of solutions other than the ones we discussed.
These tricks and solutions are plagued with issues, and in some cases don’t work at all.
Here’s a list of them:
- Change DNS / Smart DNS: If your ISP has used DNS to block websites, switching to a public DNS server like Google’s (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1) can help you bypass the filtering. But this method will not unblock anything if advanced censorship methods are used.
- Video Downloader Websites (dangerous & inconvenient): These sites pretend to let you access blocked content by downloading the page or media for you. But this isn’t similar to browsing, and modern websites rarely support this method.
- Google Translate (doesn’t work): This method used to work, but not anymore. You’d paste a site’s URL inside Google translate’s textbox with any language selected and click the link that appears in the translation textbox with English language selected.
- Tor (slow, encryption can trigger bans): Tor routes your traffic through multiple volunteer-run servers to anonymize you. But in practice, this becomes very slow. Tor’s heavy encryption also triggers automatic bans or CAPTCHA on websites with good security.
- Shadowsocks (complicated, can be expensive): Shadowsocks is a proxy-like tool and requires technical know-how for the setup. Most regular users won’t be able to use it. It can also be pricier than a normal proxy.
- Browser Extensions (dangerous): Some proxy providers and VPNs also provide browser extensions. But these can collect data and inject ads. They might also be less effective than using proxies and VPNs through a proper channel.
Why Are Websites Blocked In Some Locations?
When websites are blocked geographically, it’s called geoblocking or georestriction.
And there can be different reasons for it.
For example, sometimes government censorship is the reason why you can’t access certain sites. Countries restrict sites if their content doesn’t align, or go against, the country’s national interests (like news websites) or its values (e.g. sites with obscene content).
Schools and workplaces also practice georestriction on their network to stop people from accessing certain sites while on the premises.
Another type of geoblocking is employed by internet service providers (ISPs). They often have to block sites due to government mandates or to protect network users from security threats.
The last type of geoblocking is done by the websites themselves. For instance, a construction company that only operates in New York can block users from all other locations from accessing their sites. But there can be other reasons too. Websites can also block individual IPs they deem suspicious. They can also block regions that are commonly used to generate malicious traffic.
FAQ
Are website unblockers legal?
Not at all. The methods we discussed above are all legal ways to unblock websites.
How do I unblock a website from ISP?
If your ISP has blocked a website, you can use smart DNS switchers like Cloudflare's (1.1.1.1), or if that doesn’t work, you can use anti detect browsers like Gologin to unblock a website.
What is the most efficient way to unblock websites you have to use regularly?
Gologin offers the most efficient and effective way to unblock any website. It provides a fool proof method devoid of any issues that other methods have. If you want to unblock a certain website for a long time, you can make a separate profile for it in Gologin and add a static IP to it to appear as if the same device is browsing the website regularly. You can also use dynamic IPs if that isn’t your goal.
